About WealthMtg.com
I began this blog to help people find their bearings in the "post-McMansion era": as a mortgage broker, I find it hard to stomach clients committing themselves to transactions that will, over time, make them poorer, not wealthier.
There are two main governing principles to building wealth with a home, for the typical American household:
- Term: Mortgage term should not exceed 15 years (yes, half that of the typical mortgage). When the mortgage term exceeds 15 years, the borrower commits an inordinate amount of his future wealth to interest payments. Explore further details on the characteristics of a "wealth-building mortgage", here.
- DIY: American culture lost the "DIY spirit", but guess what: even households in the top 2% wince at contractor bills. Americans experienced a brief, anomalous period of affordable contractors: now, homeowners should anticipate not only owning a toolbox, but even knowing how to the tools within it.
